It also means something funky was done with the charging system, to be able to charge both batteries. There's no viable reason to have a second battery other than simple lack of education. Replacement doors will be far less work than trying to put back in the original handles/locks, indentions etc unless you wanted to customize different door handles with something more streamlined from a modern car. The high-intensity after-market headlights were a mess of wires and painter's tape, with the DS door-pop switch disconnected (his Dad had apparently cut a bunch of wires to "clean up the engine bay"), so the battery is required to get the PS door open, because it has no door handles. I agreed to go over and take a look at it with him, bringing my tools and a can of starter fluid.
